Earlier, Singapore had reported 18 cases of the virus, all with a history of recent travel to Wuhan.

All three are from Hubei province which is at the epicentre of the coronavirus in China.

The boy was in a stable condition and remained in isolation at the hospital located in the coastal city of Gold Coast, according to the state's health authorities.

New cases were reported in the United States, including a patient in California infected through close contact with someone in the same household who had been infected in China.

The move will give health officers more time to require the quarantine or isolation of suspected coronavirus cases and force people to undergo medical checks and tests.

U.S. President Donald Trump has offered to send experts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to China, but Beijing has yet to accept the offer of help.

Chinese authorities have tried to stop the spread by instituting bans on movement in certain regions, and extending holidays to keep people away from schools and other large gatherings.

The draft law was tabled in the state parliament on Tuesday, the first day of session in 2020.

"These are strong powers but they are necessary in these circumstances", Mr Miles has told ABC radio. It would remain in place for 12 months and apply exclusively to the novel coronavirus.

Outside of China, the prevalence of the virus remains far lower, but more than 185 cases have been reported in over two dozen countries and territories.

More foreigners were evacuated from China's locked down central city of Wuhan, the epicentre of the outbreak, and thousands of people were stranded on a Japanese cruise ship after one passenger tested positive for the virus.
