There are four confirmed cases in Canada, including one before Christ.

She said many have already endured isolation and low supplies in Wuhan, a city of 11 million in central China that has been under quarantine in an effort to contain the spread of the virus, and will have undergone a great deal of stress before they arrive in Canada.

Champagne said details are still being worked out, but the Chinese government said it will ensure families are not broken up in this process.

In a statement released Monday afternoon, MP Neil Ellis says anyone showing symptoms of the virus before leaving China will not be allowed on the plane.

An Ontario father of a 15-month-old Canadian girl in Wuhan with her grandparents said his family could have some hard decisions to make around the flight. Chloe travelling alone is "not an option that we like", he said. "They have asked the government for assistance and that is what we do when Canadians are in trouble".

The number of cases of the coronavirus has reached almost 17,500 worldwide, and the total number of deaths is now 362, the vast majority in China. Meanwhile, thousands of people, again, mainly in China but also in dozens of other countries, have been infected. But the issue is compounded for families with Chinese relatives.

As the government continues to work out the logistics of its plan to evacuate Canadian citizens now under lockdown in the Chinese province of Wuhan, opposition members will get the chance to press Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for further details on the ongoing efforts to combat the spread of the coronavirus in Canada when he takes his front-and-centre bench seat in the House this afternoon. "If I'm the International Widget Association, and I have an event booked for Vancouver, and there's a health crisis, I have to make a decision on whether or not to hold that event, and my decision has in the balance whether 1,000 people will show up", he explained.

According to CNN, almost 200 Americans evacuated from Wuhan were asked by health officials to stay for at least three days at a Southern California military base. Residents there have protested plans to place the evacuees in their neighbourhoods, throwing eggs and other objects at visiting government officials. Facilities there house banished asylum seekers and convicted criminals.

The Canadian Press reported some Australians said they preferred to stay in China.
