The G7 countries - Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States - have all confirmed cases of the virus. Coronavirus has been spreading faster than SARS and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, which originated in Saudi Arabia in 2012 and spread to other countries, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The study said the new coronavirus is 80% genetically similar to the SARS virus that killed more than 800 people in 2002 and 2003. Its prefabricated wards, where patients began arriving by late morning, are equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment and ventilation systems.

Robert Webster, an infectious-disease expert at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, told The Associated Press on Sunday that "it sounds and looks as if it's going to be a very highly transmissible virus".

Local Communist Party secretary Ma Guoqiang acknowledged Friday that officials had worsened the spread of the virus by failing to restrict travel earlier. Additionally, health officials said 2,345 of the new infections were in Hubei, bringing the total in the hard-hit province to 13,522. All Hubei schools are postponing the start of the new semester until further notice. Five new patients have been discovered in the US since last week's briefing, officials said, and four of those were in the Bay Area.

An epidemic, by contrast, refers to a more localised or regional outbreak rather than a global one. In both cases, the individual tested positive for the virus after the person's spouse returned from China.

It is South Korea's 16th case.

The Philippines banned the entry of all non-citizens from China after two cases were confirmed there, including the only death outside China. The State Department ordered non-emergency personnel and their families to leave the provincial capital city of Wuhan. A team of quarantine officials and medical staff boarded the ship Monday and began medical checks of everyone on board, a health ministry official said, speaking on condition of anonymity in keeping with department rules. The patient is recovering, and his traveling companions so far have not been infected, the captain's announcement said.

"Certainly we know that the evidence suggests actually the opposite - that in fact by closing down the borders it's much harder to detect where someone is coming from", Hajdu said, adding that an "open and honest" transaction allowed for a much more detailed screening process.

The crisis is the latest to confront Chinese leader Xi Jinping, who has been beset by months of anti-government protests in Hong Kong, the reelection of Taiwan's pro-independence president and criticism over human rights violations in the traditionally Muslim territory of Xinjiang.
