Hong Kong reports first coronavirus death as hospital workers escalate strike

The CDC said four of the patients in California were recent travelers to Wuhan, China, which has been at the epicenter of the outbreak. A growing list of countries from the U.S.to Iran have arranged flights to return their citizens home from China.

On Tuesday, the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said a 42-year-old South Korean woman tested positive for the virus, days after she returned from a trip to Thailand with chills and other symptoms.

After a steady increase in the last week in the number of coronavirus cases in California and across the US, officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Monday the virus is likely to spread.

Currently, there are six cases of the novel coronavirus in California, one in Arizona, one in Washington state, one in MA and two in IL. The couple were taken to a San Francisco hospital Monday, officials said.

U.S. travelers returning from Hubei, China, will be routed to one of 11 airports: New York-JFK, Chicago O'Hare, San Francisco International, Seattle-Tacoma, Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson, Honolulu, Detroit, Dulles, Los Angeles International, Newark International, or Dallas-Ft. The Hospital Authority said Tuesday he had existing health conditions but did not give details. "The patients have been transferred out of San Benito County by specialty ambulance".

In Wuhan, authorities started converting a gymnasium, exhibition center and cultural complex into makeshift hospitals with more than 3,400 beds for patients with mild infections, the official Changjiang Daily said.

The boy is the first child to be diagnosed with the virus in Australia and the youngest by a wide margin, with other confirmed cases mostly occurring in people older than 30, though two in their 20s are also confirmed cases.

In a statement to the Commons on Monday, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the virus would be around for several months yet.

The news comes as 240 Australian citizens and residents are being quarantined on Christmas Island, having been evacuated from Wuhan on a charter flight organised by the Morrison Government. The mandatory quarantine is the CDC's first in 50 years.

"We made an aggressive decision in front of an unprecedented threat that action now has the biggest potential to slow this thing down", Messonnier said.

By the end of Monday, the number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus on the Chinese mainland had reached 20,438, and a total of 425 people had died of the disease, according to the NHC.

Stock markets worldwide have sunk as major corporate names froze or scaled back their Chinese operations, threatening global supply chains that depend heavily on the country.

Jack Ma, the founder of Alibaba and China's richest man, will commit $14.4 million through his foundation, designating $5.8 million for two Chinese government research organizations working on a vaccine.
