China's fight against novel coronavirus outbreak

China's central city of Wuhan and the surrounding province of Hubei - the centre of the epidemic - are under a virtual quarantine.

The patient who died in Hong Kong was a 39-year-old man who had travelled to Wuhan, the mainland city that has been the epicenter of the outbreak, before being hospitalized. The husband contracted the virus during a recent trip to Wuhan.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte approved a ban on the entry of all non-citizens from China.

According to the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) the two cases in San Benito County involve spouses, one of whom traveled to China and one who did not.

The death toll in China from the novel coronavirus outbreak climbed to 425, the country's National Health Commission (NHC) said Tuesday.

"We expect to find other cases in the United States", said Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. Macao has recorded 10 cases in all.

A hospital specially built to handle coronavirus patients in Wuhan is expected to open on Monday, just 10 days after construction began. A second hospital is set to open soon after.

Swedish health officials also told people to disregard the study, saying "sources that claimed that the coronavirus would infect during the incubation period lack scientific support for this analysis". A shortage of medical supplies and overcrowded hospitals are also thought to be contributing issues. One tested negative; the other is in isolation until results are finalized.

With no end in sight to the outbreak, authorities in Hubei and elsewhere have extended the Lunar New Year holiday break, due to end this week, well into February to try to keep people at home and reduce the spread of the virus. Apart from damaging China's global reputation, such steps could worsen a domestic economy already growing at its lowest rate in decades. "I was in Hong Kong nine days ago and it seems to be too late now".

Messonnier said the CDC will observe the presidential proclamation issued on Jan 31 that bans all foreign nationals coming to the country from China for the next 14 days, except for immediate family members of United States citizens and naturalized citizens. New Zealand also raised its travel advice for China to "Do not travel", the highest level.

Germany's Lufthansa became the latest worldwide airline to suspend flights to China, and several countries are barring Chinese travellers or people who passed through China recently. If symptomatic, they will be housed near the airport and quarantined for 14 days.

It is South Korea's 16th case. A Turkish military transport plane carrying 42 people arrived in Ankara on Saturday night.

The CDC also said today they had submitted the diagnostic test now being used at laboratories in CDC headquarters for and Emergency Use Authorization (EUA). Several hundred residents protested the move.

Europe so far has 25 people infected with the virus. There are 36 French citizens who were evacuated from Wuhan, and are exhibiting coronavirus symptoms. Eight earlier cases in Germany were all linked to an auto parts factory.

There are two cases in Chicago, one person each in Massachusetts, Arizona, and Washington state.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Monday confirmed the second person-to-person transmission of novel coronavirus in the USA, marking the tenth and eleventh cases of the pneumonia-like illness in the country.

Mishustin said at a Cabinet meeting Monday that it is one of the measures outlined in a government-approved plan of action for preventing the virus from spreading in Russian Federation. The other G-7 members are France, Italy, Japan, Canada, and Britain.

Singapore reported six more cases, including four local transmissions, taking its tally of infections to 24, the health ministry said. "This is something that is a low risk we think in the U.S". The mandatory quarantine is the CDC's first in 50 years.

Rubber glove manufacturers in Malaysia, the top producer of such gear, pledged to donate 18 million gloves to Wuhan.
