Hank Azaria Won’t Voice Apu on THE SIMPSONS Anymore

According to /Film, Emmy Award-winning voice actor Hank Azaria (Ray Donovan, Brockmire) has officially confirmed that he will no longer be voicing the character of Apu in future episodes of Fox's long-running animated sitcom The Simpsons after 30 seasons.

It appears that Apu has said his final "thank you, come again" on The Simpsons.

While Groening himself might not have publicly changed his mind, Hank Azaria told /Film this week that he "won't be doing the voice [of Apu] anymore".

The character has become something of a talking point in recent years following a documentary, "The Problem With Apu", debuted online.

Azaria first lent his voice to the fan-favorite Indian immigrant character in episode 1.08 titled "The Telltale Head" which aired on February 1990.

What The Simpsons will do about Apu has remained a mystery.

And even though Azaria says he'll not be voicing the character, it's unclear whether Apu will be phased out of the show or if someone else will be voicing the character going forward.

Matt Kim is a reporter for IGN. But he's been open to this direction for a while, telling Stephen Colbert in April of 2018 that he was "perfectly willing to step aside or help transition it to something new". "We all feel like it's the right thing and good about it". It's up to them and they haven't sorted it out yet. All we've agreed on is I won't do the voice anymore. It's a character I've done for 29 years now, and I've done it with a lot of love, and joy, and pride.

Azaria has also asserted that he does not view Apu as a "one-dimensional" character. I suppose it could mean that an ethnically appropriate actor could replace him. The Simpsons over the years have been pretty humorously offensive to all manner of people - Republicans, Brazilians, presidents, high school principals, Italians - and they take a lot of pride over there in not apologizing for any of that. "If not to better the show, then to at least spare me some death threats".
