Apple Health Records Now Available for Veterans

Because the widely available FHIR-enabled Health Records feature is already enabling patients at hundreds of US hospitals and clinics-outside the VA-to access medical information from participating healthcare institutions, veterans who use the app on their iPhones will be able to see their medical data from multiple providers.

The tech titan partnered with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to give vets access to personal data on their iPhone.

The VA has been collaborating with Apple for months to roll out the new health record app after first announcing the initiative back in February.

This webinar will help providers develop patient-centric strategies to modernize their patient collection infrastructure and increase financial performance.

Apple does not provide access to its products' source code, but every now and then publishes white papers detailing how some of its technology works (e.g., Face ID). However, many safety and privateness options already been added in iOS 13-comparable to sign up with Apple and the power to have new management over whether apps can monitor you. Health records access via Apple's Health app has been available to iPhone users since the beginning of 2018. Each veteran who uses an iPhone can access his health records from these providers via the Health app.

"The Health app continually updates these records giving VA patients access to a single, integrated snapshot of their health profile whenever they want, quickly and privately", an Apple company statement said.

This capability was developed through the VA's Veterans Health Application Programming Interface (Veterans Health API).

"Helping veterans gain a better understanding of their health is our chance to show our gratitude for their service", Jeff Williams, Apple's chief operating officer, said in a press release Wednesday.

The VA started working with select patients on iPhone in a test run earlier this summer and is now able to offer this feature to any veteran who is an iOS user receiving care through through the Veterans Health Administration.
