However, the reason behind the sudden disappearance, which was first spotted by WABetaInfo, remains unclear.

WhatsApp, the hugely popular encrypted messaging app owned by Facebook, temporarily vanished from the Google Play store. The feature that was limited to just Chrome and YouTube until a few months ago reached Google Maps recently and is now said to arrive on the company's app distribution service, Google Play Store.

Note that WhatsApp has not been removed from Google Play and it seems that there is some bug that is preventing WhatsApp from appearing in the search results. If restless, then download the APK from below and sideload it on your device. That, of course, opens a whole new can of worms and a whole lot of opportunities for hackers to distribute malicious instances of the Facebook-owned privacy messenger.

While WhatsApp is offered to both iOS and Android users, anyone belonging to the latter group looking to install the app today might have felt like they were going insane. WhatsApp and Google are yet to issue an official comment regarding this.

Update 12:15 UTC, October 11: A WhatsApp spokesperson contacted TNW to let us know the app is now back up on the Play Store. SEC commissioner Kelvin Lester Lee said the agency would meet Google's representatives in the Philippines to find out how the apps of illegal lenders went online through the Google App Store.
