A Hard Rock Hotel and Casino building under construction in downtown New Orleans partially collapsed on Saturday, killing at least one person and injuring several.

A 270-foot crane involved in the project appeared to no longer be secured to the building and was also in danger of falling, meaning it could potentially bring down a cantilever weighing several tons, local officials said.

The collapse dumped debris across the road and prompted evacuations at nearby buildings.

Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards is in New Orleans urging people to stay away from the area of the collapse.

"It's still a very risky situation", he said. "We are in the process of evacuating the buildings in the perimeter".

The implosion happened Saturday morning in New Orleans, when the upper deck of the hotel started to crumble in on itself. apparently, after a crane fell from up above.

News outlets report construction workers had to run to safety as the Hard Rock Hotel, which was under construction, came crashing down.

WWL-TV aired and tweeted a viewer's dramatic video of the collapse. Authorities said no one on the ground was injured in the collapse.

The cause wasn't immediately known.

The building had been under construction for several months now. It looked like the concrete just slid from the top all the way down to the street. The franchise was planning a 350-room hotel within the city's Theater District. Plans were unveiled past year.
