Dodgers quickly decide Dave Roberts' fate after playoff debacle

Jorge Castillo of the Los Angeles Times reports that Dave Roberts will indeed return as the team's manager in 2020, "according to two people with knowledge of the situation". The skipper signed a four-year contract extension with the Dodgers last December. It never seemed all that likely the Dodgers would dismiss Roberts after Game 5.

In the 10th inning, Roberts didn't remove reliever Joe Kelly, who had loaded the bases and went on to give up the game winning grand slam home run to Howie Kendrick. Meanwhile closer Kenley Jansen remained in the bullpen until the game was out of reach. That deal runs through 2022.

You would think that it would not be so hard to lose in the National League Division Series after losing in the World Series two years in a row. L.A. dropped the 2017 Series to the Astros in seven games and then absorbed a five-game loss to the Red Sox in 2018, before making an unexpectedly early exit in this year's postseason.

This year, the Dodgers posted the best record in the National League, logging 106 wins in the regular season only to fall well short of their ultimate goal.

This wasn't the first time Kershaw had blown a game for the Dodgers nor was it the first time an ill-timed decision by Roberts cost the Dodgers a game either.

Roberts has managed the Dodgers since 2016.
