Bridge in China falls on cars below, killing three people

Rescue operations went through the night after an overpass collapsed in Wuxi City of east China's Jiangsu Province on Thursday.

The disaster in the city of Wuxi happened along National Highway 312, according to the Xinhua News Agency.

The bridge, in the city of Wuxi, fell on three cars below, killing three people in two of the vehicles, although the third vehicle was empty, it added.

Local outlet Xinhua reported that two trucks and three cars were travelling over the bridge at the time of the collapse, the vehicles were blocked by a guardrail on the overpass, leaving two passengers with injuries.

Other images showed crushed cars, with only their front sections or headlights visible under a huge block of grey concrete.

Officials said Thursday evening that the bridge may have collapsed due to a heavily overloaded truck, Chinese state media reported.

Construction and road accidents are not uncommon in China.

In February 2018, at least eight people died in the centre of Foshan, Guangdong province, when a water leak inside a subway station construction site caused a major road to cave in.
