3 hurt as Silverstone Air plane skids at Wilson Airport, Nairobi

"This morning at around 9:00 am, a Fokker 50 aircraft. veered off the runway while departing from Wilson Airport, Nairobi".

It is unclear what caused the accident, but a passenger said that they were just about to take off when the pilot noticed "some issues".

"His Excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta commends emergency rescue teams stationed at Wilson Airport in Nairobi for their swift response following an accident involving a Silverstone Air operated Fokker 50 aircraft".

The police and Kenya Airport Authority (KAA) officials said that several passengers had sustained injuries and rushed to various hospitals across the Kenyan capital Nairobi.

Images from the scene showed that the aircraft plunged into a thicket, hitting some trees and breaking part of its wing, before being grounded, tilted to one side.

Kenya Red Cross reported that the craft, registration number 5Y-IZO, "developed some technical hitch while taking off".

Firefighters, who arrived on the scene in good time, sprayed thick foam on the plane as they battled to prevent flames. The operator Silverstone Air said all passengers and crew have safely disembarked with the cause of the crash not yet known. Silverstone airlines reported in a press statement that all its passengers are safe.

The aircraft that was headed to Lamu crashed shortly after takeoff due to overloading and disregard to the safety regulations at the airport.
