Dorian Continues On Path Toward Puerto Rico

"We are grateful that it wasn't a stronger storm", he said.

An update from the National Hurricane Center showed Dorian weakening from a Category 3 when it hits Florida to a Category 2 by the time it makes its way to Orlando on Monday afternoon.

"Hurricane-force sustained winds would be carried across the entire width of the state if the current forecast holds", he warned. Hurricane force winds begin at 74 miles per hour. "Dorian is forecast to strengthen and become a powerful hurricane during the next few days over the Atlantic waters".

But the storm could still prove a major test of Puerto Rico's electrical grid two years after Hurricane Maria wiped out power on the entire island and thousands died in the aftermath of the storm.

The organisation said the storm could grow into a Category 3 as it heads in the general direction of Florida.

A Hurricane Warning is in effect for Vieques, Culebra, U.S. Virgin Islands, and the British Virgin Islands.

Nearby St. Lucia also braced for Dorian's arrival, and a hurricane watch was issued for the small island.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Chabad of Puerto Rico wrote they're "Leaving nothing to chance" and making a "final inspection to ensure generator function" before Hurricane Dorian was expected to hit the island.

Winds near the coast in Puerto Rico could range from 45 to 60 miles per hour with gusts up to 75 miles per hour, according the weather service.

The British Virgin Islands and the Puerto Rican islands of Vieques and Culebra were also in Dorian's path, the first major test of emergency preparedness for the USA territory since the 2017 devastation of Hurricane Maria, though the main island appeared to have been spared the brunt of the storm.

The NHC says on this track, Dorian should move over the Atlantic well east of the southeastern and central Bahamas Thursday and Friday.

But the timeline has changed.

The NHC also predicted that the storm will gain power, becoming a Category 2 hurricane as it is expected to reach Florida early Sunday.

For tropical storm Dorian there are advisories in place as it tracks ever closer to land. The worst was expected from Wednesday afternoon to early Thursday before the storm pulls away.

Last night, Dorian was moving generally on a northwestern course toward Puerto Rico and was no longer expected to develop into a hurricane before it makes landfall there.

Erin had top winds of 40 miles per hour and could get a bit stronger today, the hurricane center said, but it will begin a weakening trend on Thursday.

Tropical Storm Erin, meanwhile, is posing no threat to land as it churns off the USA eastern seaboard.
