Kia Seltos officially unveiled in India; Launch later this year

Kia has officially revealed the exterior of its all-new Seltos SUV, its first global entrant into the burgeoning compact crossover market. The T-GDI high-performance engine will be available with the 7-speed DCT, however, the exact engine-transmission tie-up is not known. The Seltos will compete against Hyundai Creta, Tata Harrier, Jeep Compass, MG Hector and the likes.

The SP Concept evolved into more conventional SP Signature Concept and graced the Seoul Motor Show earlier this year.

On the outside, the Kia Seltos gets a prominent front fascia dominated by the signature Tiger Nose black grille with chrome surrounds and sharp LED headlights with sequential turn blinkers fitted just below and the long strip of LED Daytime Running Lights catches attention. Two LED strips extend towards the centre of the grille from the edges, giving it a futuristic look. Unique elements inside the headlamp itself make it look stylish. Chrome has been tastefully used all over the SUV, lending it an upmarket feel. The raked windshield, blacked out pillars, inclined rear glass area, integrated roof spoiler with high mounted stop lamp, shark fin antenna, rising beltline and turn signals integrated on wing mirrors can also be seen from the side.

A range of alloy wheel designs and sizes will be available, ranging from 16 inches to 18 inches in diameter.

The GT Line on the Seltos gets red inserts on the front skid plate, rear skid plate and a dual muffler design.

Given the Seltos was revealed in India today, and a version of it will be built there for that market, features like AEB and adaptive cruise control aren't as much of a priority compared to markets like Australia and Europe, and probably explains why they haven't been detailed yet.

In India, Kia will offer the Seltos with a naturally aspirated petrol engine, a turbocharged petrol engine and a turbocharged diesel engine.

Kia will be offering BS6 compliant petrol and diesel engine options right from the beginning of the launch. Kia is also offering four transmission options, unlike any other auto in the Indian market. The 1.4-litre turbo petrol will get a 7-speed DCT automatic. Drivers can choose from mud, wet and sand mode depending on road condition.

The 1.5-litre petrol engine, on the other hand, will come paired with the 6-speed manual and a CVT gearbox. The 1.5-litre diesel will be offered with 6-speed torque converter automatic. For instance, the coloured TFT screen positioned in the middle of the instrument cluster, a segment-first eight-inch HUD and a 10-25-inch horizontally oriented touchscreen infotainment system appears to have been derived from the Telluride - the brand's flagship SUV with the largest footprint ever.

The interior of the Seltos will be offering a lot of new features including Bose Sound System, 10.25-inch Touchscreen, Heads Up Display, 360° Camera, Ventilated Seats, Powered Driver's Seat, Front and Rear Parking Sensors, Sunroof, Air Purifier, Automatic Climate Control, Rear AC Vents, etc.

Kia's first model for India, the Seltos gets BS6-compliant petrol and diesel engines, connected auto tech and a long features list.

Talking about the connected cars, the Kia Seltos will offer the UVO system, which will keep the vehicle connected to the Internet all the time.

It also packs six airbags, ABS, ESC, vehicle stability management (VSM), traction control, brake-assist system, hill start assist control among others.

Sales of the all-new Kia Seltos are scheduled to commence in Australia before the end of the year, with local versions to be produced at the company's plant in Gwangju, South Korea. The Seltos looks set to create some ripples in the segment and we expect it to be priced aggressively as Kia has heavily localised it.

If Seltos can satisfy the Indian customers, it can be sold in other markets such as Middle East, Africa, Latin America and Asia, he added. The Korean brand has also said that it will start off its operations with 265 touch points across 160 cities in India.
