Hurricane Lane: Hawaii hit by flooding and landslides as storm nears

Hurricane Lane, which was still offshore, already lashed the Big Island with almost 20 inches (50 centimeters) of rain in almost 24 hours and was moving closer, putting it and Maui "in the thick" of the storm, National Weather Service meteorologist Melissa Dye said.

Hurricane Lane, the once-Category-4 storm that rapidly declined to a Category-2 as it moved over Hawaii's Big Island today, had as of this morning dumped 31 inches (78 centimeters) of rain on Hakalau Forest Biological Field Station in the southeastern portion of the state, and is expected to continue to drop water on the island state for days to come.

Early Friday, National Weather Service meteorologist Chevy Chevalier described flooding on the Big Island as catastrophic. The Big Island has been hardest hit so far with rainfall exceeding 30 inches, transforming normally tranquil waterfalls into violent torrents.

Fire department personnel have conducted several rescues of people stranded by high water on the Big Island since Thursday, mostly around its biggest city, Hilo, said Kelly Wooten, a Hawaii County civil defence spokeswoman.

Though the storm was expected to turn west, which would lessen the threat to the islands, federal authorities urged caution.

In addition to the extreme rainfall, unsafe surf conditions and strong winds are likely as the powerful storm tracks closer to the Hawaii's central islands.

"The hurricane should not have a significant effect on the eruption aside from minor rockfalls at the summit and increased steaming from Puu Oo and Lerz vents", the US Geological Survey said. Maximum winds had weakened slightly to 210km/h, the National Weather Service said. As the heavy rain continues, Boyer said, the foundation likely will give out.
