Sony Mobile unveils redesign of flagship phone at gadget show

Similarly when watching the trailer for the new Jumanji film (corporate synergy in motion), the phone felt like it was buzzing whenever it damn well felt like it - not in time with the audio or what was happening on screen.

Hot on the heels of announcing two new smartphones, Sony is also showcasing a pair of truly wireless headphones at this year's Mobile World Congress.

Sony's mobile division was the only part of the company to report a loss in its last financial quarter and there has been speculation that the business might be shut down or sold off. Yes, the name isn't very inspiring, but the XZ2 delivers nearly everything you'd want from a new flagship phone. And surprisingly, the Xperia XZ2 Compact has been priced at the same amount when compared to its predecessor, i.e., the Xperia XZ1 Compact. It's powered by Qualcomm's flagship Snapdragon 845 processor and 4GB of RAM, and has 64GB of built-in storage along with a microSDXC card slot supporting memory cards up to 400GB. What about Sony's signature high-res camera? They might be more interested in the 19MP Motion Eye camera which has been upgraded with the ability to record 4K HDR videos, a smartphone first.

Also, like on the previous XZ Premium, the XZ2 still has that insane 960 fps ultra-slow mode recording feature and Sony's sophisticated predictive capture focusing tech. that can track things as they move around.

Then there's the XZ2's body. The idea for gaming rumble is that an algorithm processes the audio data of whatever is playing and vibrates the phone accordingly.

The display is a 5-inch unit with 18:9 ratio and Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection. The Japanese company has also added some new features to its 3D Creator app which allows people to use the 5MP selfie camera to create their 3D avatars instead of just the main snapper. The smartphones are also dust and water resistant with the IP68 certification. More like the buzz of painting.

Despite having mostly the same spec, aside from the lack of the Dynamic Vibration system, a plastic back, and a smaller battery, the Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact has an RRP of €600, which basically isn't much of an increase from its predecessor at all.

What do you think about these phones? 7 minutes in the case gives you an hour of further use.

This feature was originally developed for the Sony's PlayStation controllers. This has been switched up for the Xperia XZ2 series.

The device sports stereo speakers for extra audio bite, a rear fingerprint sensor, a 3180 mAh battery that can be charged via a Type-C USB 3.1 port, and Qi wireless charging. In order to make getting the most out of the feature a bit more intuitive, Sony have adopted a chatbot inspired approach where you exchanges messages with the assistant - which is really interesting to behold.

The one thing I'm still concerned about is that Sony isn't working directly with any carriers to get the XZ2 into brick and mortar stores, which will hurt mainstream appeal. You'll have to order this online like you would a OnePlus or Essential phone. Its four different finishes offer a reflection and shine from every angle, thanks to the glass and flow of light, available in Liquid Silver, Liquid Black, Deep Green and Ash Pink.
