Vivo showcases concept phone with half-screen fingerprint scanner at MWC 2018

The Apex concept has just 1.8mm thin bezels on the top and sides, with a 4.3mm bottom chin.

Vivo unveiled the smartphone at the Mobile World Congress 2018 (MWC).

It seems that Vivo wasn't satisfied at the short-lived and relatively small publicity it got for shipping the world's first in-display fingerprint scanner, made by Synaptics, in its Vivo X20 Plus UD.

Vivo Apex pushes the FullView design to reduce the bezels even more and managed to achieve the 98% screen-to-body ratio.

This isn't the first time we've seen the tech - Sony's 2017 OLED 4K HDR TV has an "Acoustic Surface" that emits sound from the screen - but Vivo is the first to do so on a phone.

Vivo is not planning on selling the Apex at any point; instead, it looks to be testing the reaction to its technology solutions.

Microchips mounted directly to the flexible circuit board result in the staggering screen-to-body ratio, courtesy of a flexible OLED platform, Vivo said. Xiaomi's Mi Mix addressed this with a piezoelectric design that worked similar to bone conduction technology, but Vivo's approach here is to vibrate the entire screen itself like a speaker - you can still hear phone calls without holding the device to your head.

Vivo doesn't have any new products to announce at MWC this year; since it already stole the show with the first under-display fingerprint scanner back at CES. This address the concern of in-display fingerprint scanners being limited to the thumbnail-sized icon to unlock the phone.

The most obvious one of these is the selfie camera. The APEX concept phone features an even better under-display fingerprint scanner technology as it spans across the bottom-half of the display.

As you can see in the GIF above, the 8MP front facing camera rises out of the top of the phone when you switch from rear to front camera in app.

The design of the APEX also puts the phone's proximity sensor below the display, and also hides the ambient light sensor.

There's now no spec sheet for the Vivo Apex, but the firm also claims it will offer hi-fi quality audio through the two down-firing speakers on the base of the handset - and we also know that it has a dual-camera on the back.

According to Alex Feng, the Senior Vice President of Vivo, "From breakthroughs in audio, photography to In-Display Fingerprint Scanning Technology, Vivo has remained committed to realizing our vision for future smartphones".

What do you think of the company's latest concept phone? "We will continue to explore all possibilities to bring the best possible experiences to our consumers".
