Alcatel 1, 3 & 5 Series Are Affordable, 18:9 Smartphones - MWC 2018

There are plenty of big announcements still coming at MWC, with companies like Samsung and LG sure to make a big splash in the smartphone market. Not only that, Alcatel knows high-end phones aren't for everybody, which is why the company has announced five new phones in total, all offering solid specs without breaking the bank.

The Alcatel 3 and 3X are largely similar in terms of specifications, but the latter can be configured with 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage in addition to the 2/16 gig SKU that's standard for the non-X 3. Why 18:9 instead of 2:1? Alcatel is the first to bring the 18:9 aspect ratio across their entire range of smartphones regardless of price. Confusingly enough, the brand new phone debuted by Alcatel that's running the new system is also called the Android Go, or if you want to get technical, the Android Oreo (Go Edition), and unfortunately for eagerly-waiting Android fans out there, reviews are lukewarm thus far. The device is equipped with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. We've already seen some OEMs take advantage of those optimizations, but no phones running a "Go Edition" version of Android have landed until now. It's unclear when these devices will be available in the USA or what their pricing will be, though Alcatel has previously said its 5 series of phones will cost less than $300, 3 series phones will be sub-$200 and the 1 series would cost $100. More specifically, the Alcatel 5 features a 5.7-inch 1440×720 pixel screen with an 18:9 aspect ratio.

In the camera department, the 5's selfie shooter is 12-megapixels, while the front shooter comes in at 13-megapixels.

Rounding out the Alcatel 5′s feature set is a 3,000mAh battery, fingerprint reader, and Android Nougat. It'll be available next month for 149,99 euros and comes in black, blue, and gold.

But the Alcatel 3V is the largest and sharpest member of the 2:1 family, with a 6-inch FHD+ panel in tow, while the 5.7-inch HD+ Alcatel 5 has a completely bezel-less chin and dual front-facing camera going for it. They all have numerous same features, like the 18:9 FullView display, facial recognition, and a commitment to Android software updates, but there are a few key differences depending on which model you opt for. Other features include a 3,000mAh battery, fingerprint reader, and Android Oreo.
