Hundreds of Florida Shooting Survivors Meeting With Lawmakers

The town hall on Wednesday night followed days of sit-ins, walkouts and demonstrations in solidarity with survivors of the massacre.

"Now!" The students said they feared shootings at their schools. Marco Rubio, a Republican, told the crowd.

Peterson resigned from his post at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School following the shooting at the campus in which 17 people died. Authorities say he used an AR-15 rifle. "Your comments this week and those of our President have been pathetically weak", he said to cheers. "Yet, I always feel better leaving than when I first came in".

Guttenberg called on the senator to do something about guns. The state's governor and legislature have stated that they won't support any sort of gun control measures.

"I think schools as soft targets need to be fortified", Israel said.

Rubio and Rep. Ted Deutch agreed.

The sheriff said Superintendent Robert Runcie fully supports his decision.

"When you get hundreds of kids all together doing the same thing, no one can really ignore it", explained Free State sophomore Jadon Ballinger. "You will get it done".

The students clapped and chanted before a faculty member asked them to stop.

"I signed a memorandum directing the attorney general to propose regulations to ban all devices that turn legal weapons into machine guns", he said. The shooting is considered one of the deadliest shootings in recent history.

The event at the White House included survivors from Stoneman Douglas, and families affected by the shootings at Columbine High School and Sandy Hook Elementary School.

The President pledged to go to work after the meeting ended. "We have so much gratitude for them today and the bravery they've shown".

"It was more of a debate than a discussion", she said.

"There aren't a lot of bills focusing on mental health, and we hope to change that", Corin said.

Nikolas Cruz, a 19-year-old former student of the school, has been charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder in the assault.

"Please listen to us".

'I want everyone in our community to know that we take threats to our schools with the highest priority and DeLand Police will not compromise at all when it involves the safety our students, ' Umberger stressed.
