Terrorists kill mother, daughter working to eradicate polio

"The martyred workers have rather rekindled our resolve to finish the polio from the country and save our future generations from this deadly disease", they said in a statement.

Expressing sympathies with the bereaved families, the PM said polio teams were rendering a huge national service to save children from the crippling disease.

One Sehat Muhafiz; namely Sakeena Bibi with her daughter Rizwana Bibi were martyred by two unidentified motorcycle riders as both were vaccinating children during an on-going national campaign against polio. At least 13 policemen and a civilian were killed in the suicide attack near a polio centre that was later claimed by the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan.

No group has said it was behind the attack.

Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria are the only three countries in the world where polio has still not been eliminated.

"UNICEF joins the Government of Pakistan in its condemnation of the killing of two polio vaccinators in Balochistan earlier this week". Clerics have claimed the vaccines will sterilise Pakistani children.

In a separate attack in Quetta, the capital of Baluchistan province, assailants killed two policemen.

Mahmood Jan, an Islamic cleric, said: "In Quetta and the surrounding districts of Balochistan, people fear espionage like [that carried out by] Shakil Afridi".

"Currently, polio vaccination teams are guarded by police personnel".

Islamist opposition to all forms of inoculation grew after the Central Intelligence Agency organized a fake vaccination drive to help track down Al Qaeda's former leader Osama Bin Laden in Abbottabad.
