Feds Will Retry Menendez On Corruption Charges

"I want to thank the jury, 12 New Jerseyans who saw through the government's false claims and used their Jersey common sense to reject it", he told reporters outside the courthouse, before blasting the Justice Department. The most serious charge against Menendez, honest services fraud, is punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

Menendez was accused of accepting bribes from political donor Salomon Melgen.

Prosecutors said Menendez pressured government officials on Melgen's behalf over an $8.9 million Medicare billing dispute and a stalled contract to provide port screening equipment in the Dominican Republic, and also helped obtain US visas for the doctor's girlfriends. Walls declared a mistrial after individually interviewing members of the jury when it remained deadlocked. "An early retrial date is in the best interests of the public, and the United States is available to schedule a retrial at the court's earliest convenience", they stated.

Prosecutors allege that Menendez engaged in a bribery scheme with co-defendant Salomon Melgen, a longtime friend, doing political favors for him in exchange for luxury hotel stays and campaign donations.

He's running for re-election this year despite his legal trouble and already has become a punching bag for national Republicans, who have sought to tie Menendez to other Democrats on the ballot this year.
