Atlanta makes short list for Amazon second headquarters in North America

New Haven made a bid to host the new Amazon headquarters in conjunction with Bridgeport in October 2016, after the state selected Hartford and Stamford for Connecticut's submission. The company adds that construction and ongoing operation of Amazon HQ2 is expected to create tens of thousands of additional jobs and tens of billions of dollars in additional investment in the surrounding community.

"Getting from 238 to 20 was very tough - all the proposals showed tremendous enthusiasm and creativity", Holly Sullivan of Amazon Public Policy said in a statement. Amazon said it would consider locations that were not chosen as finalists for future investments.

The Borderplex Alliance, a regional economic development organization based in El Paso, submitted what it billed as a regional proposal for Amazon's HQ2 - including El Paso, Las Cruces and Juárez. Because of the Amazon application and the recent City of Vallejo marketing done in support of the website, the city has received numerous inquiries by businesses seeking to locate in Vallejo that may translate into economic wins.

It's worth noting that the only non-U.S. city finalist is Toronto, a city that reportedly isn't offering outrageous subsidies to seduce Amazon. Toronto recently announced a partnership with Sidewalk Labs, an urban innovation company owned by Google's parent company Alphabet, to build a futuristic neighborhood.

"I suspect that there are quite a few Amazon folks at the table compiling the list", Basu said. "Not necessarily surprised, but I am disappointed. Their proposals may have simply fallen short". The bid called Winnipeg "the least expensive city to operate a tech company".

For instance, when it comes to quality of life, Austin frequently appears on lists related to best places to live.

Just one California city made the cut, as Los Angeles is the lone West Coast location under consideration.

These are the final cities which were selected from 238 communities that submitted nominations.

For example, Tucson, Arizona sent Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos a giant 21-foot cactus, Birmingham, Alabama installed huge Amazon delivery boxes around town, and Kansas City Mayor James Sly gave 5-star reviews to an assortment of Amazon products. "This is a considerable boost for Vallejo, one we may not have had without the Amazon opportunity as an objective to pursue".
