Trump on North Korea: 'I Don't Want to Telegraph What I'm Doing'

On Wednesday, Pence also reaffirmed the U.S.'s commitment to freedom of navigation in the South China Sea and said its common defense alliance with Japan extended to islands also claimed by China.

Pence, on a 10-day Asia trip that will also take him to Indonesia and Australia, said Mr. Trump hopes China will use its leverage to get its longtime ally North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons program and ballistic missiles.

"But the era of strategic patience is over", he declared.

"The United States of America will always seek peace but under President Trump, the shield stands guard and the sword stands ready". While the United States moved an aircraft carrier to the Korean coast to intimidate Pyongyang, North Korea made a display of its missile strength and tested a missile which failed, though it was seen as an act of defiance.

In Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, speaking to reporters Monday evening, said he hopes "there will be no unilateral actions like those we saw recently in Syria and that the USA will follow the line that President Trump repeatedly voiced during the election campaign".

Susan Thornton, acting USA assistant secretary of state for East Asia, said Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and China's top diplomat, State Councillor Yang Jiechi, agreed in a phone call on Sunday on the need for strict enforcement of United Nations resolutions and for global action to press Pyongyang "to cease provocative actions and recommit to peaceful denuclearisation".

A nuclear war between North Korea and the US seems imminent.

Unlike Obama, however, Trump has made a decision to confront this threat head-on, dispatching what he called a "very powerful" armada to the Korean Peninsula as a sign of strength and a show of solidarity with the United States' allies in the region, South Korea and Japan. Pressure on North Korea is crucial, the prime minister said.

Two days earlier, Pence took part in some unscheduled mean-mugging at North Korea, stepping outside of the South Korean Freedom House to look across the demilitarized zone. -South Korean installation, which is just outside the 2.5-mile wide (4 kilometers) DMZ.

The US and South Korea have activated the Terminal High Altitude Area Defence system, which is capable of intercepting incoming warheads from North Korea.

Vice foreign minister Han told the Associated Press last week that North Korea was prepared to handle a war with the U.S. "But dialogue for the sake of having dialogue is meaningless".

"They have been talking with this gentleman for a long time", he said, referring to North Korea leader Kim Jong Un.

"We will not rest and will not relent until we obtain the objective of a denuclearized Korean Peninsula", he said.

Such a contingency could include the risk of an armed conflict breaking out as tensions on the peninsula have risen in the wake of multiple North Korean missile tests.

The North has warned of a nuclear strike against the United States if provoked. While President Donald Trump and his team were touting the move as a show of force, the strike group was sailing in the opposite direction about 3,500 miles away. "If those businessmen in power in the United States thought of intimidating us by any military or sanction threats-as the [Barack] Obama administration used to do and failed-they will soon find out such threats are useless", Sin said.

In an interview with Fox News aired on Tuesday, Trump talked about his strong relations with Chinese President Xi Jinping and explained the reason behind dropping his past criticism of the Asian country.
