Waukesha Police: 1 arrested after 'critical incident' at Waukesha high school

Police are investigating what they call a "critical incident" after gunshots were reported at a high school in Waukesha, Wisc.

Police in Wisconsin say a suspect has been taken into custody after shots were fired inside Waukesha South High School on Monday morning, according to WITI.

A school spokesman says a student exchanged gunfire with a school resource officer at a suburban Milwaukee high school.

"The suspect would not remove his hands from his pocket and continued to ignore officers' commands", Jack said.

Waukesha police and sheriff's deputies soon arrived at the school and tried to de-escalate the situation to no avail.

Jack said the suspect is in stable condition.

This is a breaking news update.

Terry Schuster told The Associated Press there's no threat to Waukesha South High School.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, citing school officials they did not name, said a student exchanged shots with a school resource officer.

The suspect is in custody. She said the school would issue a statement later.

Waukesha is a city of about 70,000 residents 20 miles west of Milwaukee.

Police said it was an isolated incident and that they are not seeking any other suspects.
