Town braces for first winter storm

Parts of the Northern Plains into Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin could see snowfall of 6 to 12 inches, according to the National Weather Service, with some areas seeing as much as a foot and a half of snow.

Forecasters said a new storm is expected to bring several feet of mountain snow, rain and gusty winds to California through the weekend.

The National Weather Service in Wyoming reported 4 inches (10 centimeters) of snow fell in Cheyenne from 7 p.m. Friday through 10 a.m. Saturday "that has been blown all over kingdom come by our winds", said meteorologist Andrew Lyons.

A winter storm is moving across the region today and tomorrow, with freezing rain, sleet and heavy snow predicted for much of central NY and Northeastern Pennsylvania.

Portions of Northern California and Nevada are under winter storm watches or warnings, with NWS Sacramento saying that "travel is highly discouraged" between Saturday morning and Monday evening.

Farther south, rain and thunderstorms are forecast along and ahead of the cold front, with locally heavy rainfall possible Saturday in parts of the Tennessee and Ohio Valleys. On Sunday, residents at higher elevations are expected to receive snow, too.

A six-year-old girl who was also in the vehicle remains missing, and two adults and four other children were rescued by helicopter from the scene. "Still, enough snow could pile up in neighborhoods around the city to warrant plowing".

That was added to 30cm of snow that fell before Thanksgiving.
