Calculations recommend that the Milky Way galaxy's stellar-mass black holes - which kind after the violent deaths of big stars - ought to prime out at exclusively 25 instances the mass of the solar, the researchers stated.

LB-1, a black hole 15,000 light-years away, has a mass 70 times greater than that of the Sun - previous estimates suggested that no stellar black hole would have more than 20 times the Sun's mass. Scientists expected many dying stars to shed most of their gas, making something this large impossible without readjusting theories. Gobbling gas from a companion star created X-ray emissions that were detectable from Earth.

The vast majority of stellar black holes in our galaxy are not engaged in a cosmic banquet though, and thus don't emit revealing X-rays. Liu's team, however, searched for stars which are orbiting inactive black holes, which are discoverable only by their strong gravitational pull. The scientists backed up their observations with data from two other telescopes.

Scientists used the world's largest optical telescopes-Spain's Gran Telescopio Canarias and the US's Keck I-to determine the system's physical parameters.

Expectation-shattering discoveries aren't new, even in recent memory.

Liu's group found the black hole utilizing gravitational observations from China's Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST). "Intriguingly, the black holes involved in such collisions are also much bigger than what was previously considered typical". The research team led China A has found a very large black holes about 14,000 light-years from Earth.
