Doctor Who Returns New Year's Day

AMERICA's hit action-adventure series, Doctor Who, is back!

After kicking off the season with a two-part episode, Doctor Who will then settle into its regular time slot on Sunday, Jan. 5 at 8/7c.

Although this is obviously very good news, it brings with it the sad realization there won't be an annual Doctor Who Christmas special - making this the second time in as many years that Whovians have had to do without one, after the long-running sci-fi series opted for a New Year's special last season instead. That's why we're so excited that BBC America finally announced on Monday that Doctor Who will return for Season 12 on New Year's Day at 8/7c.

Additionally, BBC America and Fathom Events will host a one-night-only screening of Doctor Who's season premiere and second episode, which will be simulcast to more than 600 cinema screens nationwide on January 5 (followed by a live Q&A with Whittaker, Cole and Gill). After the screening, audiences will be treated to a LIVE Q&A with Jodie Whittaker, Tosin Cole, and Mandip Gill, transmitted from The Paley Center for Media in NY. Tickets and a list of participating locations can be found here beginning Friday, Dec. 6.

"What better way to ring in a new decade than with our favorite Time Lord?" said BBC America Executive Director Courtney Thomasma in a statement. "Let the New Year's countdown begin!" The twelfth series will also welcome a host of famous faces including Stephen Fry, Sir Lenny Henry CBE, Robert Glenister and Goran Višnjić to name just a few. In addition, the network will also debut animated "lost episodes", titled "The Macra Terror", as a special post-holiday treat on Thursday, December 26 at 9pm ET/PT.

Spyfall has been written by Chris Chibnall, Showrunner.
