Iran reportedly downs drone over southern port city of Mahshahr

It later said the drone could have been an Iranian model downed during nighttime exercises to test missile systems.

The drone was reportedly hit in the early morning at the port city of Mahshahr, which is in the oil-rich Khuzestan province and lies on the Persian Gulf.

He said the drone violated Iran's airspace but did not provide any additional information, including whether it was a military or civilian drone.

Iran shot down an unidentified drone near the port of Bandar-e Mahshahr on the Gulf coast on Friday, Iranian media reported, four and a half months after the downing of a USA drone almost triggered air strikes. Tehran said the drone "violated" its territorial airspace, while the US called the missile fire "an unprovoked attack" in worldwide airspace over the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf.

Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency said the drone "downed over Iran's airspace with the army's domestically made Mersad surface-to-air missile". He confirmed that the drone was foreign but did not elaborate.

In June, Iran shot down an unmanned U.S. surveillance drone, which the elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said was flying over southern Iran - a move that brought the region to the brink of war. Tehran said the drone "violated" its territorial airspace, while the USA called the missile fire "an unprovoked attack" in worldwide airspace over the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf.

The incidents come amid soaring tensions between Tehran and Washington since President Donald Trump unilaterally abandoned a landmark 2015 nuclear deal previous year and reimposed crippling sanctions.
