Grand Rapids Woman Will Be Part Of The First All-Female Spacewalk

McClain became the 13th woman to walk in space on March 11, when she realized the medium suit fits her better, and Koch became the 14th woman in history to do a spacewalk on March 29. In March, NASA cited spacesuit availability as the reason for scrapping the walk.

In this photo made available by NASA astronaut Jessica Meir on September 29, 2019, Christina H. Koch, left, and Meir greet each other after Meir's arrival on the International Space Station. "However, individuals' sizing needs may change when they are on orbit, in response to the changes living in microgravity can bring about in a body".

Koch was supposed to be a spacewalk with another female crewmate in March.

"It's an honour to follow in Peggy's footsteps", Koch said. After the first all-female plan was shifted, Koch configured the second spacesuit herself using what was available on board.

Christina Koch, who grew up in Jacksonville, North Carolina, and attended NC State, will join Jessica Meir in the historic spacewalk that is part of an ongoing effort to upgrade the space station's power system.

Koch and Meir, a marine biologist who arrived at the orbiting lab last week, are both members of NASA's Astronaut Class of 2013, the first and only one with an even split between men and women.

Koch and Meir were asked in an interview from space on Friday about whether they mind having their accomplishments qualified by their gender, i.e. the first all-female spacewalk and longest spaceflight by a woman.

Christina Koch is already two-thirds of the way through the mission which will total more than 300 days and make it the longest continuous spaceflight made by a woman.

The NASA astronauts have spent more than seven hours in space during the first of 10 planned spacewalks. The tweet also showed an image of pairings for the upcoming spacewalks. The batteries being replaced are ten years old; the new copies should last until the end of the ISS mission. In addition to her first spacewalk with Koch, she will also conduct a spacewalk with European Space Agency astronaut Luca Parmitano.

"It's just normal", she said.

The six-member Expedition 61 has officially started as NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Roscosmos cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin along with UAE astronaut Hazza Ali AlMansoori undocked from the International Space Station on Thursday.

Although NASA is yet to schedule the spacewalks, they are likely to unfold throughout November.
