Whoopi Goldberg Joins Stephen King's 'The Stand' for CBS All Access

Whoopi Goldberg has officially been cast in The Stand at CBS All Access.

They're joining previously announced cast members Marsden, Amber Heard, Odessa Young, and Henry Zaga.

The Stand presents an apocalyptic vision of a world decimated by plague and embroiled in an elemental struggle between good and evil. In the novel, Mother Abagail is a 108-year-old daughter of freed slaves who has psychic powers.

First and foremost: The View moderator Whoopi Goldberg has signed on to play the pivotal role of Mother Abagail in the series. As CBS points out, Goldberg is one of the few artists who have managed to win an Oscar, a Grammy, the Golden Globe, an Emmy (primetime and daytime), and a Tony Award.

Adepo, who appeared in When They See Us, will portray Larry Underwood, a young musician with a taste for fame, as well as illegal substances.

Owen Teague will take on another role as a troubled teen in a Stephen King adaptation; the IT actor will play Harold Lauder, a plague survivor who finds himself caught between who he was and who he can be. While his intentions are good, jealousy and his infatuation with Frannie threaten to lead him down a dark path.

Orange Is the New Black's Brad William Henke will play Tom Cullen, a simple man with powerful psychic abilities. A sweet soul, he will be instrumental in their fight for survival.

Sunjata will guest star as a new character named Cobb, a military man charged with supervising Stu as the government searches for a cure during the outbreak.

The 10 episode series from writers Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars, The New Mutants) and Ben Cavell (SEAL Team), reveals that this is the way the world ends: with a nanosecond of computer error in a Defense Department laboratory and a million casual contacts that form the links in a chain letter of death. Boone, who is a longtime fan of the novel, will also direct. The Stand begins filming this fall for a 2020 premiere, according to All Access's announcements to the Television Critics Association in August.
