McIlroy tops Koepka for PGA Tour Player of the Year

McIlroy had feared he would come up short to world number one Koepka in a vote by his peers for Player of Year, despite following wins in The Players and the RBC Canadian Open with a final-round win over Koepka for the Tour Championship and the $15 million FedEx Cup bonus.

The 30-year-old beat out competition from Brooks Koepka, Matt Kuchar and Xander Schauffele for the award, which comes just weeks after his victory in the season-ending PGA Tour Championship.

Any golfer who competed in at least 15 FedExCup events was eligible to vote for the award.

McIlroy admitted he was surprised to win the award over Koepka, who last month was named PGA of America Player of the Year and considered the front-runner after finishing in the top-five at each major, including at the PGA Championship where he picked up his fourth major title.

McIlroy beat out Brooks Koepka - the PGA Championship victor - in the player vote despite not winning a major championship on the season. I've harped on this a little bit over the course of the year: I think players don't just feel four weeks a year are important, it's more than that. "I am very honoured that they thought enough of my season to give me this award". "I think it says a lot about what I've put into this year and some of the decisions I made starting off the year". That year, Nick Faldo won PGA Player of the Year while Wayne Levi won PGA Tour Player of the Year.

"Every year is different". I feel like I'm a better player now than I was in 2014.

McIlroy and Koepka were the only PGA Tour players to win three events this past season.

McIlroy also added 14 top-10 finishes. Koepka also finished T-2 at the Masters, solo second at the U.S. Open and T-4 at the British Open.

Im Sung-jae of South Korea was named the PGA Tour Rookie of the Year, lifting the renamed Arnold Palmer Award.
