Christian Yelich out for the season with fractured kneecap

Milwaukee Brewers star Christian Yelich broke his right kneecap on a foul ball Tuesday night and will miss the rest of the regular season.

The injury occurred in the first inning against the Marlins in Miami.

The outfielder was the NL MVP previous year, and Yelich entered the night batting.330 with 44 home runs and 97 RBIs for the playoff-contending Brewers, and led the majors in slugging percentage and OPS. The outfielder was leading the majors in slugging percentage and OPS when he was hurt. The Brewers now trail the Cubs in the NL Wild Card race by 2.0 games. Now, with Yelich joining fellow offensive linchpin Keston Hiura on the shelf, it's especially hard to imagine the Brewers rallying to clinch a playoff spot for the second consecutive year.

That looked pretty terrible for a while, as Yelich was clearly in serious pain.

No matter who you root for, this is just a brutal injury.
