El Zakzaky set for India medical trip

Leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, Sheikh Ibrahim El Zakzaky and his wife, Zeenat, are set to depart the country for his medical treatment in India.

El-Zakzaky and his wife have been in detention following clash between members of his group and the Nigerian Army.

Associates of the cleric told PREMIUM TIMES he arrived at the airport Monday afternoon and will be flown in a private chartered aircraft to India.

This follows the order of the Kaduna State High court granting El-Zakzaky and his wife leave to undergo treatment at an Indian hospital of their choice.

He emphasized that the IMN leader must return immediately after his discharge from the hospital to face his charges. The trip came on a day about 186 doctors from Pakistan, India, Iran, Afghanistan, Syria, Lebanon and Iraq wrote a letter to President Muhammadu Buhari pointing on Sheikh El-Zakzaky's physical conditions, asking the Federal Government to transfer him to a well-equipped hospital as soon as possible.

He said, however, the Nigerian Intelligence Agency (NIA) took over the movement of the IMN and wife medical trip.

Among other conditions, the state government had demanded that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs must confirm the appointments of the IMN leader and his wife with the Medanta Hospital, India, and undertake all necessary diplomatic arrangements and protocols to ensure compliance with the conditions of the medical leave. "The sureties must also produce evidence of landed property within Kaduna State".

It could however not been confirmed if those conditions had been met.
