Verizon announces sale of Tumblr to Automattic, the owner of WordPress

In an announcement today, Automattic, the company that owns WordPress, revealed that it has agreed to purchase Tumblr from Verizon, though the price it paid hasn't been disclosed.

Automattic Inc's successful takeover bid came with the caveat that the company probably won't be bringing back much of the hardcore pornographic content Verizon (Yahoo's parent company) banned past year.

Tumblr is getting a new owner. Verizon seems to be selling it for a song and had been looking for buyers from earlier this year. This took place after the Verizon takeover, and after Tumblr was banned from the Apple App Store after it had emerged that the blogging platform was hosting child pornography.

The site, up until then, remained a go-to for not-suitable-for-work (NSFW) content, and the move reportedly led to an estimated 20 percent drop in users within a matter of months.

Beyond financial turmoil, Tumblr was pulled from the Apple App Store briefly past year as it worked to combat child pornography hosted on the platform, an ordeal that led to a new and wildly unpopular site policy banning adult content of all stripes. When Verizon purchased Tumblr in 2017, the company introduced an adult content ban on Tumblr, leading to a huge backlash from users. Automattic's CEO, Matt Mullenweg said that while Tumblr " is one of the Web's most iconic brands", his company is excited to add it to its portfolio, which, in case you didn't know, already includes WordPress, WooCommerce, Jetpack, Simplenote, Longreads, and more. Around 200 Tumblr employees, along with the company's technologies, will be acquired by Automattic for an undisclosed amount as part of the deal.
