India's next coach: Mike Hesson on shortlist of six

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday shortlisted six candidates for the men's team's head coach including current Indian cricket team coach Ravi Shastri. Kapil Dev-headed CAC will be interviewing the candidates and BCCI will name the coach the same day.

The Australian has rich coaching experience and his pedigree makes him one of the favourites to bag the job. However, his stint with New Zealand hadn't started on a particularly good note, and he was widely seen as having played a role in Ross Taylor's unceremonious removal from captaincy in favour of Brendon McCullum.

He also served as Kings XI Punjab head coach for one season in IPL-12 before resigning earlier this month.

Hesson and the two other overseas coaches are likely to join the committee members over video conference, while Rajput and Robin, team manager and fielding coach during India's 2007 World T20 win, are likely to be present in Mumbai for the interviews. He was also the coach of the Windies' side that won the T20 World Cup in 2016.

Former cricketer Tom Moody played eight Test matches for Australia between 1989 and 1992 scoring 456 runs.

Since his retirement from all forms of cricket in 2004, the former India all-rounder has been extensively involved in coaching. He was also the fielding coach of the Indian team from 2007 to 2009.

Since 2012, he has been serving as the coach of IPL team Hyderabad.

He then joined as the Mumbai Indians head coach in 2010 and he is now the fielding coach of the franchise.

He then coached the Khulna Division cricket team in the Bangladesh Premier League and Uva cricket team of the Sri Lanka Premier League. At the franchise level, he has been on the coaching team of the Barbados Tridents in the Caribbean Premier League.

Confirming the updates, a senior BCCI official was quoted by CrickInfo as saying by Press Trust of India, "These six will give presentation for head coach before CAC". The shortlisted candidates are Ravi Shastri, Robin Singh, Lalchand Rajput, Phil Simmons, Tom Moody and Mike Hesson.

Former team manager Lalchand Rajput has also thrown his hat in the ring for the job of the Indian cricket team's head coach.

While current coach Shastri got automatic entry for the selection process and is considered favourite to retain the position, nearly everyone has a considerable amount of global experience.

He was the batting coach for Afghanistan national cricket team and later on was appointed as the head coach in 2017.

The 44-year-old from Dunedin is the former head coach of New Zealand cricket team. The Indian team has had mixed results under the Kohli-Shastri partnership.

He was appointed as head coach of the team replacing Anil Kumble in 2017 by the previous CAC.

India may have failed to win the T20 World Cup in 2016 and the ODI World Cup in 2015 and 2019, but the Shastri-Kohli duo helped the country climb to the top of the Test rankings with a historic series triumph in Australia.
