Tiger limited by stiff back, concerned about playoff workload

Former No. 1 Woods has a good record at Liberty National in Jersey City, finishing second in the Barclays in both 2009 and 2013.

"Just feeling stiff, being smart about it", Woods said.

"This is kind [of] how it is", Woods told reporters.

Woods has only once played back-to-back weeks on the PGA Tour this year and has not played three in a row since September last year.

The 2017 FedEx Cup champ has yet to win a tournament in 2019, but lately he's shown he can once again contend with the best in golf.

At the Northern Trust, Woods will be joined by most of the world's top 125 players, headlined by top-ranked Brooks Koepka and and Rory McIlroy, the No. 2 behind him in the FedExCup standings. "That's what's guaranteed", Woods said.

The hole was a bit of a microcosm for Tiger Woods's day, as the 43-year-old suffered stiffness in his lower back that forced him to only chip and putt for the final nine holes of the golf course.

"Yesterday I was out there hitting it great", Woods said Wednesday. Driving it out there with Brooksy and D.J. Today, I'm stiff. "Hopefully I'm not that way [Thursday]".

The first round is scheduled to begin at 7:10 a.m.

After hitting a drive on the eighth hole of the Northern Trust pro-am Wednesday, Woods made a decision to rest up the remainder of the round, instead opting to only hit chips and putts.

That was one of the first instances of apparent back trouble for Woods, who less than a year later had the first of four back procedures that all but derailed his seasons from 2014 to '17.

If he plays well enough to be in the top 30, he will make the Tour Championship finale at East Lake, where the crowd went wild last year at his ending a five-year title drought. "It's good for the Tour; good for the players, good for the fans, the sponsors, everybody when he plays".

If he makes it to East Lake in Atlanta, it will be the first time he has played three straight tournaments since the playoff run a year ago in September. He added three additional top-10 performances at the WGC Dell Tech Match Play, the WGC-Mexico Championship, and the Memorial.

"There's concern, hopefully because of the pressures I'm going to be facing", Woods said. "That's why it gets hard".

"If you're missing cuts, who cares? You're taking weekends off and a couple extra days of rest", he said.

'I'm trying to get myself where I'm in contention and it takes a toll on you and that's what I want to feel.

"I want to feel that type of tiredness where I have a chance to win, had a chance to win, had a chance to win. That's a good feeling".

Tiger is also serving as a captain of the United States' President's Cup team and has to sort out the membership.

"He's Tiger Woods. He doesn't need to prove anything to anyone", said four-time major victor Rory McIlroy.

But he has to play well to get there.
