President Donald Trump ripped into The New York Times for changing its headline on a story detailing his response to the mass shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio.

After Trump delivered an address in the aftermath of the deadly shootings, in which he condemned racism and white supremacy, the newspaper planned a front-page story with the headline, "Trump urges unity vs. racism". Cory Booker (D-N.J.) in a reaction on Twitter. Amid a storm of criticism on social media, including from top Democratic presidential candidates, the newspaper later altered it to the more critical: "Assailing hate but not guns". One, Rolling Stone writer Jamil Smith, said that "the new hed stinks, too".

The New York Times Public editor Dean Baquet said the next day that the headline was a "bad headline".

"I understand the concern people have".

It's not the first time liberal Times readers have canceled-or threatened to cancel-their subscriptions over what they view as unacceptable coverage.

The president commented on the changed headlines after he saw former Clinton advisor Mark Penn describing the Times flip-flop as "an astounding development in journalism" on Fox News.

A spokesperson for the paper added, "The original print headline was clearly flawed and was changed for all editions after the first".

On Monday evening, New York Times print editor Tom Jolly tweeted an image of the paper's Tuesday morning print edition, featuring a headline about the speech that read "Trump Urges Unity Vs. Racism". Is that journalism today?

"After 3 years I nearly got a good headline from the Times!".
