Cyclone 'Vayu' intensifies into severe cyclonic storm

It has advised fisher-folk in Lakshadweep, Kerala and Karnataka for not venturing into the sea till 13 June.

The weather department warned that it will intensify into a cyclonic storm by Tuesday afternoon and a severe cyclonic storm in the next 24 hours. The storm is also expected to pack winds up to 135 kilometres per hour on Thursday.

Rupani told reporters in Gandhinagar that the entire coastline, starting from Kutch to south Gujarat, has been put on "high alert".

Indian Coast Guard, Navy, Army, and Air Force units have been put on standby and surveillance aircraft and helicopters are carrying out aerial surveillance.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of heavy rains and high winds at a speed of over 110 kilometres on June 13 and 14 in coastal areas of Saurashtra and Kutch.

After a review meet with District Collectors and officials, Additional Chief Secretary (Revenue) Pankaj Kumar said schools, colleges and anganwadis in coastal districts would remain shut on June 12 and 13.

D Sivananda Pai, head of the IMD's long-range forecasting said, "Progress of the monsoon seems unlikely till 15-16 June because the cyclone will drag moisture away".

The government has chose to deploy 30 teams of the NDRF in the coastal districts.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has prepared almost 40 teams with boating equipment and tree-cutters, and the Indian Coast Guard, Navy, and Air Force units have been put on standby. Ports are also directed to flag a danger signal.

The depression over south-east, adjoining Lakshadweep and east-central Arabian Sea moved northwards with a speed of about 31 kmph on Monday.

Gujarat is at presently reeling under severe heat wave as the maximum temperatures in major cities, including Ahmedabad, hovering over 43 degrees Celsius since the last week of May.

"It is very likely to be 65-75 kmph gusting to 75 kmph over Gujarat coast; and 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph over north Maharashtra Coasts & northern parts of eastcentral Arabian Sea", the IMD added.
