New York Jets Unexpectedly Fire GM Mike Maccagnan: Twitter Reacts

The New York Jets fired general manager Mike Maccagnan Wednesday after four seasons with the team, replacing him with head coach Adam Gase on an interim basis.

In addition, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that NY fired vice president of player personnel Brian Heimerdinger. In the interim, Coach Gase will be the acting General Manager. He moved on to the Bears for a season before joining the Eagles immediately after the 2016 draft, and he's been credited with helping build the roster that won a Super Bowl in 2017 and should contend over the next decade or so. ESPN reported during the draft that friction had developed between Maccagnan and Gase because of disagreements over personnel during free agency.

While a reason for his firing was not provided, rumours emerged recently of a feud with Gase.

Maccagnan had significant input into the hiring of Gase. We have discussion on everything.

NY hired Gase, who had just been fired by the Miami Dolphins, to replace Bowles, and also signed free agent running back Le'Veon Bell to a four-year contract. We have to work through so much stuff and that's what we've got to do.

"Since we started, we've been in constant communication whether he's coming down to my office or I'm going to his office, that's all we're trying to do is make sure we're on the same page all the time".

The timing is unusual considering Maccagnan oversaw the Jets' draft less than three weeks ago, although there were rumors that he and Gase had some tension - which both denied.

Still, Maccagnan survived the firing of head coach Todd Bowles that came right after the season and was a part of the group that chose Gase as the replacement.

Heimerdinger and Maccagnan worked together in Houston, and Heimerdinger joined the Jets three years ago.
