Mother kept away from baby due to drug test results

Elizabeth had eaten a bagel, covered in poppyseeds.

Elizabeth Dominguez had given birth to son, Carter, in a NY hospital when Child Protective Services (CPS) was called.

Arriving at the hospital to give birth, Dominiguez was asked for a urine sample, and was subsequently left shocked when it came back testing positive to opiates.

Elizabeth Dominguez was stunned to hear that she had tested positive for opiates the day she went into labor with her son Carter. "I called my husband freaking out saying 'how is this possible?' I don't do drugs", she said.

While Dominguez was swiftly reunited with her baby boy, she says the ordeal was terrifying. "I felt like a bad mother leaving him".

The doctor noted that it was highly likely that the poppy seeds had not been washed properly prior to baking on the bagel.

Clinical pharmacist Dr. Michelle Rainka told the station that anyone taking a test should be aware of the potential.

"I just want everyone to know that this can happen", she said. It's such a awful thing and I don't want it to happen to anyone, ' she stated.

Such false-negative results were made famous with the NBC sitcom when Julia Louis-Dreyfus' character Elaine Benes tested positive for opiates because of the poppy seeds on her favorite muffins.

"Anywhere from one to three bagels with poppy seeds can produce positive tests on a urine toxicology", the physician added.

Later reports confirmed that the positive stemmed from the bagel. I was having contractions.

"I said, 'Well, can you test me again?"

"I told the lab, I told the hospital, I told everyone, 'Retest me. Take my blood. Do whatever you have to do, because this isn't right'".

It would prove to be a mistake after the hospital tested her urine.

Eden sent research she conducted on false positives due to poppy seeds to the hospital and said that the hospital should either warn expectant mothers or raise the threshold for positives. The child was required to remain hospitalized for medical observation.
