Bill Nye the Science Guy warns ‘the planet is on (expletive) fire’

The science commentator was a guest on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver on Sunday evening and did not hold back when discussing the Green New Deal, introduced by Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Ed Markey. Oliver is known for his very raw takes on politics, pop culture, and the environment, so it was only right that Nye followed suit.

"There are a lot of things we could do to put it out". No, of course not. "Nothing's free, you idiots", Nye continued.

Nye was invited to explain some of the topics like the Green New Deal, studies which warned of food shortages and wildfires as well as carbon pricing - with his unique brand of teaching.

Appearing in a lab coat and donning safety glasses, Nye opined "when something costs more, people buy less of it", in reference to a possible carbon tax that's been floated by politicians as a way to mitigate climate change. Look out, because while you might not typically associate angry talk with the normally-mild-mannered "Science Guy" Nye, when it comes to the threat of global climate change, he has - understandably, perhaps - lost his patience. In the segment, Oliver explained some of the ideas in the bill and why it seemed like a good way to get a conversation going about how people can reduce their carbon emissions. Putting a fee on carbon creates incentives to emit less carbon, and, more importantly, it also incentivizes the development of low-carbon technology, which is huge, because that's vital to reducing emissions globally. "You're not children anymore", Nye says in the now-viral video. But you're adults now, and this is an actual crisis, got it? Safety glasses off, motherf***ers.?

"Grow the fuck up".

With that proclamation, Nye pulled out a blowtorch and blasted the globe, which immediately burst into flame. "As a man who has studied the science of meteorology for over 60 years and received the AMS (American Meteorological Society's) "Meteorologist of the Year" award, I am totally offended that Nye gets the press and media attention he does".
