How To Watch The Tesla Model Y Launch

The event at the electric auto company's Los Angeles design studio will give the public a first look at the vehicle, a hybrid between a auto and an SUV. Or so says Tesla CEO Elon Musk in a recent tweet.

Big excitement is brewing at Tesla's Design Studio in Hawthorne, California, tonight, March 14, 2019, as CEO Elon Musk will reveal the much-anticipated Model Y crossover SUV via a livestream scheduled to start at 8 p.m Pacific/11 p.m. Eastern.

Based on the Model 3 platform, the Model Y is a cheaper, scaled-down version of the Tesla Model X SUV.

"Detailed specs & pricing will be provided, as well as test rides in Y".

The Model Y is about 10 percent larger than the Model 3.

Analysts said that with the Model Y, Tesla look to dig its claws into the profitable compact SUV segment, which grew by 12.6 percent to 3.5 million SUVs sold in 2018.

Tesla is teasing the Model Y with an image of its blacked out silhouette to promote Thursday's reveal. It has a sleek tapered front-end with the larger rear and height of a compact crossover/SUV. If it wasn't for that legal threat, Tesla's lineup would have included the Model S, Model E, Model X and Model Y - i.e., SEXY.

China's General Administration of Customs stopped clearing Tesla Model 3 imports last week, saying they did not have the required Chinese language warning signs and had missing or incorrect nameplate labels.

Its shares fell more than 5 per cent on the day news of its imports being suspended first broke and rose 3 per cent later after it said the issue had been resolved.

This set-up should help the Model Y make it into production quicker and cost less to develop.
