In the last few months, Marvel's next set of acquisitions has been the subject of a lot of speculation and hearsay, with some fans even hoping that Endgame will tease the new arrivals in the post-credits scene.

The series included some truly weird premises, including turning Wolverine into the Lord of the vampires, transforming Marvel's writers and artists into the Fantastic Four, and postulating what would happen if Venom had possessed The Punisher.

The comics for What If have kind of went on and off over the years, but I think it would be interesting to bring these imaginary scenarios to the MCU.

Whether or not this report, in fact, turns out to be true or not remains to be seen. How does one approach an off the wall project of this nature... who are they aiming it at? What stories will they choose to tell? Will the focus be around stories centered on the popular characters such as the Avengers from the MCU or comic canon. the smart money says the former because those are far more bankable properties which a much wider audience is familiar with. We have already heard some of the plans they have in mind for the Marvel Universe, most notably, a series based on Tom Hiddleston's Loki and one based on Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch.

The comic, called "What If...', was an anthology series examining turning points in Marvel's history, imagining alternate worlds where key characters" lives unfolded differently. If I was unsure if I'd get the service or not, this news is a definite check on the "get it" column. It's the same division that handles the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe films (as opposed to the ABC and Hulu shows, which are under the Marvel Television group), so that should help it get a boost when it comes to working with the existing Marvel films.
