Big Twitter App Update Brings Focus on Photos and Videos

Company executives are also introducing new features to enhance pictures and video on the app, a move that adds features similar to those found on competitors like Instagram and Snapchat.

Bloomberg reported more than a year ago that Twitter was developing the feature with a working demo version. It also simplifies the current cumbersome process of sharing videos or photos on the text-dominated platform. The update allows users to more easily access the service's existing camera, encouraging them to show nearby events in real time, whether its breaking news, a sporting game, or a festival.

While everyone was expecting Twitter to launch a separate app just for testing, the social giant announced a major update is coming to Android and iOS devices as we speak.

The company offered the public a new prototype for the Twitter app, which includes a variety of changes to how the platform looks and operates.

Taking cues from Kanye West, buttons for likes, retweets, replies, and shares are hidden, until a user taps on an individual tweet. Conversations now appear rounded, similar to a chat, with indentations and color-coded markers to make the discussion easier to follow. The app will continue to evolve, and the features tested may never be developed, Twitter said.

The news has not gone down well with people on Twitter so far, with many questioning what benefit these changes will actually have.
