Trump Is Expected to Launch an 'American AI Initiative' Today

U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday will sign an executive order asking federal government agencies to dedicate more resources and investment into research, promotion and training on artificial intelligence (AI), a senior administration official said.

"If there's no implementation plan behind the EO - with details, deadlines, and funding - then it may be worse than no EO at all", Wendy Anderson, general manager for defense and national security at SparkCognition, told reporters.

As part of his State of the Union address last week, Trump called for "investments in the cutting edge industries of the future", and the administration official underscored the importance of AI in "driving" these future industries for the US. The Chinese government has made a 10-fold increase in AI output a national priority for coming years, and many companies there are deploying machine-learning systems to update banking services, identify faces in crowds, and control drones. "This is not an option".

Research and development: Federal funding agencies will be asked to "prioritize AI investments" in their allocations.

"[The The American AI Initiative]... will accelerate the ability of [NOAA] researchers to create AI that can assimilate the massive amounts of big data from our environmental satellites into our weather models to improve predictions of hurricanes and severe storms", it continues. American workers are also part of the AI initiative, which will equip them with apprenticeships, fellowships, and programs in the AI industry. Lastly, the US will foster worldwide collaboration for AI.

The so-called American AI Initiative does not directly target the communist country, but some experts believe the approach leaves no doubt about the administration's designs.
