Amazon buys router company Eero to hook deeper into the home

Amazon announced the acquisition of home mesh router maker Eero Monday afternoon, with executives from both companies painting it as a way improve connectivity in people's homes. The merger is expected to be completed by the first half of 2019. The company's WiFi systems help users get a fast and reliable WiFi connection in all parts of their home with the mesh WiFi system, essentially working as a blanket. "By joining the Amazon family, we're excited to learn from and work closely with a team that is defining the future of the home, accelerate our mission, and bring eero systems to more customers around the globe". Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"We are incredibly impressed with the Eero team and howquickly they invented a WiFi solution that makes connected devices just work", said Dave Limp, senior vice president of Amazon Devices and Services.

Amazon has made some major smart home deals in the recent past.

Based on its $90 million in funding, the Eero deal appears to be smaller than Amazon's last notable smart-home acquisition. The most notable is Ring, the smart doorbell maker that Amazon acquired previous year. Customer reviews, 1-Click shopping, personalized recommendations, Prime, Fulfillment by Amazon, AWS, Kindle Direct Publishing, Kindle, Fire tablets, Fire TV, Amazon Echo, and Alexa are some of the products and services pioneered by Amazon. Since the acquisition, Ring has put out a number of other security-focused devices to round out its offerings. "We started with WiFi because it's the foundation of the modern home".

Around this time previous year, Amazon made a similar deal with its acquisition of smart doorbell-maker Ring. These are sometimes in areas that could be soft spots for WiFi coverage, but the addition to eero to Amazon's lineup could represent a solution for that issue.
