Malek, who called his win "truly extraordinary", did express his gratitude to Dexter Fletcher, who stepped in for Singer but is not a credited director on the film.

THE Favourite was the big victor at Baftas 2019 with seven gongs, as Olivia Colman scooped the Best Actress award.

British costume comedy The Favourite earned the accolade for Best British Film, Best Actress for Olivia Colman, Supporting Actress for Rachel Weisz, Original Screenplay, Costume Design, Makeup & Hair, and Production Design.

Director Alfonso Cuaron poses for photographers backstage with his Best Film and Best Director award for his film Roma at the BAFTA awards in London.

During an evening of typical showbiz glitz and glamour at London's Royal Albert Hall, The Favourite swept the board winning a staggering seven BAFTAs.

The Absolutely Fabulous star began the British film awards ceremony on Sunday night with a series of gags about the nominated films and stars, but some viewers were shocked at her quip about the film BlacKkKlansman.

"We're having an wonderful night aren't we", Colman told her fellow "The Favourite" nominees as she picked up the award.

Rachel Weisz, who played Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough, in the film was named Best Supporting Actress, pipping her co-star Emma Stone who was nominated for her portrayal of Abigail Masham in the movie. We are going to get so pissed later.

"The thing I really want to do is Emma and Rachel-I must keep it together-not just for your performances but for what you did after the cameras stopped rolling", Colman said.

Elsewhere, Roma, Alfonso Cuaron's black-and-white film about his childhood in Mexico City, was named best film and best film not in the English language, while he was also named best director and cinematographer. In his acceptance speech, Malek thanked the late Queen's frontman as "the greatest outsider of them all". The Duke of Cambridge as President of BAFTA presented the Fellowship of the Academy, its most prestigious honour, to film editor Thelma Schoonmaker.

Singer denies the story and the film itself was still up for the award, although it failed to win it.
