Sofia Open - Efficient Medvedev proves too strong for Fucsovics

Australian Open semi-finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas was stunned in the quarter-finals of the Sofia Open on Friday, losing 6-3, 7-6 (7/5) to veteran Frenchman Gael Monfils.

Herbert breezed through the opening set but Berdych offered more resistance in the second, only for the former world number four to crack at a key moment.

"I want to be better, not everybody reaches number one, but I want to become number one", said Medvedev, who is now 16th in the ATP rankings.

Monfils took the first thanks to breaks at either end of the set and although second seed Tsitsipas had a 5-4 lead in the second-set breaker with two serves to come, his opponent reeled off three straight points to secure progress. "Today, I served very well, this is my best serving day so far".

Big-hitting Russian Daniil Medvedev brushed aside Hungary's Marton Fucsovics 6-4 6-3 on Sunday to win the Sofia Open title, gifting himself an early birthday present.

In an all-French affair, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga defeated Jeremy Chardy 6-7 (6-8) 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 to book a showdown with Radu Albot, who got the better of Marcos Baghdatis 6-2 7-6 (7-2).

The Italian outclassed top seed Karen Khachanov and Fernando Verdasco in a sparkling week in the Bulgarian capital but his energy went down in the third set.

Berrettini's semi-final opponent is to be Hungarian Marton Fucsovics, who made it to the last four on his 27th birthday after fourth seed Roberto Bautista Agut, the Sofia Open victor in 2016, withdrew before the quarter-finals due to illness.

The two players were meeting for the first time on the ATP Tour and made it a contest to remember. The young Russian lost the opening set against Robin Haase in the second round but he never looked back after that, winning the following eight sets and going all the way for the first success in 2019 after three titles claimed in the previous season.
