Danny Ainge: Celtics, Kyrie Irving Getting "Married" On July First

"And I think that it's more like an engagement, and we're going to get married on July 1st", Ainge said. "And I think that that engagement is still on, as far as I know". "But we really can't make those vows, sign that contract, until July 1st".

Irving further pushed the "breakup" narrative when he said last week he'd do what's best for his career, telling reporters "I don't owe anybody s-". "That's just where it stands", Irving said February 1.

Ainge made an appearance on the Toucher & Rich radio show Friday morning where he described the team's current relationship with Irving as an "engagement", with the marriage still on for July 1st. But I feel like there's still a chance that on July 1st he stays here, and that's what we're shooting for. It wasn't because he traded Jabari Bird to the Atlanta Hawks to free up a roster spot, it was because the New Orleans Pelicans did not move Anthony Davis, which now puts Ainge in prime position to land the big man.

Even though no deal is now on the table, Davis staying put at the trade deadline means the Celtics are in the driver's seat to acquire the superstar big man this summer.

League sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski that the Celtics have promised to be aggressive with their wealth of draft and player assets to try to acquire Davis, and that Ainge is eager to pair Davis with Irving.

Irving had announced prior to the campaign that he meant to sign a long-term deal to remain in Boston, who acquired the six-time NBA All-Star via trade with the Cleveland Cavaliers. As he expressed, he and his superstar point guard are in constant communication, and there has been no indication of Irving's intentions of signing with another team once he becomes a free agent in the offseason.

The Celtics (35-20) are in fourth place in the Eastern Conference standings entering Friday's games.
