The Chromecast Audio is being discontinued

Honestly, the Chromecast Audio technology (both through Google's dongle and integrated in some speakers) has not been very successful since the beginning, targeting a very small niche of people. It could also signal that similar functionality may soon come baked into its entry-level offering, Google Home Mini.

Since then, Google has launched its own line of speakers, while third-party manufacturers have added Google's casting protocol to their own products as well. While being a fantastic add-on to traditionally "dumb" speakers, the Chromecast Audio never really caught on for the general public. In the simplest terms, the device was a wireless audio receiver.

Sarah Tew/CNET "Our product portfolio continues to evolve, and now we have a variety of products for users to enjoy audio".

Google said it will continue to offer assistance for Chromecast Audio devices.

Either way, the brilliant little dongle that has transformed multiple speakers in my home and office is officially being canned by Google. The company told Android Police it has stopped manufacturing the audio-only version of the Chromecast, so when the current stock runs out, the product will presumably be gone forever.

Chromecast Audio visually resembles the regular Chromecast video product, but features a 3.5mm audio jack and cable rather than an HDMI cable.

Those interested in snatching up a Chromecast Audio should act fast. Unfortunately, Google is now discontinuing the dongle.

The device is listed as "Out of Stock" and no longer available to purchase through Google's online store.
